With the Second DLC on the Way, Star Wars Outlaws Is Now Free to Try on PS5, PC, and Xbox
Ubisoft takes fans by surprise with a free demo of Star Wars Outlaws. Three hours of galactic exploration on Tatooine—dogfights in orbit, sabacc showdowns, and a chance to rediscover a title seeking redemption. The Star Wars universe has rarely felt so inviting… or so full of promise.
Star Wars Celebration Japan 2025, held this past weekend, felt like a true hyperspace jump for fans of the galaxy far, far away. Between the explosive reveal of Star Wars Zero Company—a turn-based strategy game by Bit Reactor and Respawn Entertainment—and the announcement that Star Wars Outlaws is heading to Nintendo Switch 2 on September 4, players were spoiled. Amidst this packed news cycle, Ubisoft pulled out its ace: a free demo of its open-world space adventure, available now on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X.

A free, instant galactic ride on Tatooine
While Star Wars Outlaws didn’t quite meet expectations when it launched in 2024, Ubisoft is making a bold move to turn things around: giving all players a generous slice of the game for free. It’s a mix of clever marketing and interstellar goodwill—hoping to reignite interest in its ambitious open-world adventure developed by Massive Entertainment.
Now available on PC (Steam), PlayStation, and Xbox, the demo offers three hours of gameplay in one of the franchise’s most iconic settings: Tatooine. Weighing in at around 30 GB, the demo lets players:
- Engage in thrilling space dogfights above the planet
- Take on notorious factions like the Hutt Cartel and Tusken Raiders
- Roam the legendary streets of Mos Eisley
- Try their hand at Kessel Sabacc, the smugglers’ favorite card game
Important note: progress will not carry over if you purchase the full game later. Still, the demo shines with depth and content.
Curious timing—with a clear intent
The demo arrives more than seven months after the game’s initial release—a surprising move at first glance. But it aligns with a clear strategy: reignite interest in a title that, while earning mostly positive reviews, fell short of Ubisoft’s commercial expectations. According to Insider Gaming, the game sold one million copies in its first month—a solid figure, but not quite enough for the publisher.
The demo could be the spark needed to attract a fresh audience—or win back early skeptics.
A new hope with the “A Pirate’s Fortune” expansion
The demo’s release coincides with another major announcement from Star Wars Celebration Japan 2025: the arrival of A Pirate’s Fortune, the game’s second story expansion, landing May 15.
This new chapter takes Kay Vess and her trusty companion Nix to the Khepi system, alongside the infamous galactic pirate Hondo Ohnaka (a fan favorite from The Clone Wars). The adventure promises:
- A high-risk infiltration into the Tomb of Khepi
- Clashes with Stinger Tash and the Rokana Raiders
- Smuggling missions for the mysterious Miyuki Trade League
A rich and thrilling expansion that could reignite excitement for the game’s universe.
Game-changing updates
It wouldn’t be fair to judge Star Wars Outlaws solely by its launch version. Since then, Massive Entertainment has rolled out several major updates, improving key systems like stealth gameplay. Last December, a re-review by Aftermath highlighted that the game is now “significantly improved”, even calling it “possibly the most Star Wars game ever made”.
With a free demo for all, a promising expansion on the way, and refined gameplay mechanics, now might be the perfect time to give Star Wars Outlaws another shot—or dive into it for the very first time.
